Exotic Shorthair

History:
Early history of the Exotic started from more than one direction over than thirty years ago. American shorthair breeders had visions of creating a cat with a unique image. One example was using the longhaired Himalayan cat with the color marking of a Siamese.
More breeding gave into a new direction of colors both hair and eyes. In 1966 the proposed creation of a new breed was introduced. It was very difficult to find breeders who were willing to breed their Persians with a short haired hybrid. The goal from the beginning was to create a Persian with short hair.

General Infomation:
The Exotic Shorthair is a wonderful mix of playfulness and loyality. One might say they look exactly like their Persian friends having the flat face and big beautiful eyes. Sort of like a cross between a Persian and a Teddy Bear, only very short hair. The Exotic is
bred to meet the Persian standard in every way but the soft short hair makes him a perfect companion without all the grooming required for their long haired relatives.

General Characteristics:
The ideal Exotic should present an impression of a heavily boned, well balanced cat with a sweet expression and soft, round lines. The large, round eyes set wide apart in a large round head contribute to the overall look and expression. The thick, plush coat softens the lines of the cat and accentuates the roundness in appearance.

Head:
Round and massive, with great breadth of skull. Round face with round underlying bone structure. Well set on a short, thick neck.

Nose:
Short, snub, and broad, with "break" centered between the eyes.

Eyes:
Brilliant in color, large, round, and full. Set level and far apart, giving a sweet expression to the face.

Ears:
Small, round tipped, tilted forward, and not unduly open at the base. Set far apart, and low on the head, fitting into (without distorting) the rounded contour of the head.

Body:
Of cobby type, low on the legs, broad and deep through the chest, equally massive across the shoulders and rump, with a well-rounded midsection and level back. Good muscle tone, with no evidence of obesity. Large or medium in size. Quality the determining consideration rather than size.

Legs:
Short, thick, and strong. Forelegs straight. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind.

Paws:
Large, round, and firm. Toes carried close, five in front and four behind .

Tail:
Short, but in proportion to body length. Carried without a curve and at an angle lower than the back.

Coat:
Dense, plush, soft and full of life. Standing out from the body due to a rich, thick undercoat. Medium in length. Acceptable length depends on proper undercoat. Cats with a ruff or tail-feathers (long hair on the tail) shall be transferred to the AOV class.

Exotic Colors:
White, Blue, Red, Black, Peke-Face Red, Creme, Chocolate, Lilac, Chinchilla Silver, Shaded Silver, Blue Chinchilla Silver, Blue Shaded Silver, Chinchilla Golden, Shaded Golden, Blue Chinchilla Golden, Blue Shaded Golden, Shell Cameo (Red Chinchilla), Shaded Cameo (Red Shaded), Shell Cream (Cream Chinchilla), Shaded Cream (Cream Shaded), Shell Tortoiseshell, Shaded Tortoiseshell, Shell Blue, Shaded Blue, Shaded Black, Shell Black, Shell Blue-Cream, Shaded Blue-Cream, Shell Chocolate, Shaded Chocolate, Chocolate Smoke, Shaded Lilac, Shelled Lilac, Lilac Smoke, Shelled Chocolate Tortoiseshell, Shaded Chocolate Tortoiseshell, Chocolate Tortoiseshell Smoke, Shell Lilac Cream, Shaded Lilac Cream, Red Smoke, and Blue-Cream Smoke.

Temperment:
Exotics are an ideal breed because of the gentle temperament and quiet gentle ways. They are not demanding and will happily sit at your feet or curl up in a welcome lap. This breed is very playful and stays kitten like throughout adult life barring no illness.
When shopping for a pet kitten, males are preferred because they appear sweeter and more loving. Their easy going nature allows them to fit into your home at any age.
