General Information:
No other cat gives as much boundless
affection as a Burmese! In return, they require great amounts of
love and affection in order to be happy. Burmese will find a warm
lap at every opportunity or you can readily find a Burmese soulfully gazing
upon you from heights. You cannot be still one moment, without a
Burmese catching the opportunity for some hugs and lap time. They
love to be adored and will reward you with much personal attention.
Breeding:
There are basically three looks that
Burmese are bred for. The Contemporaries have a shortening of the
muzzle, a shorter nose and a different chin profile. They were begun
in the mid 70's and there is much controversy regarding their health and
birth mortality rate.
History:
Traditional Burmese descended from
a single cat named Wong Mau in 1930. After a breeding program
involving Sealpoint Siamese, a sable Burmese was produced. They were
accepted to championship status in the mid thirties by CFA and ACA.
Description:
The Traditional Burmese is shaped very
much like an American Shorthair. The Classic Burmese has a wide wedge shaped
face, with a SLIGHTLY more elongated body legs and tail than the Traditional
Burmese. The contemporary Burmese has a bashed in nose and bulbus eyes
and comes with a long list of lethal genes. The Traditional Cat Association,
Inc. does NOT support the contemporary Burmese!
Temperment:
They are the most affectionate, stick
tight, lap sitting friends in our feline family. We call them our "under
cover cats", because they always burrow down under the quilts with us to
sleep at night. You need not worry about ever being cold, if you own a
"Burmese". Any "Burmese" loves attention and lavishes it back to
its human family. Often they pick one special human, who is theirs and
theirs alone.
