Troubles with CP
Besides problems with controlling muscle movements, other problems are experienced.  The majority of these problems are due to the brain being injured.

CP also affects movement of the mouth, face, and head.  This causes the person to have difficulty biting, chewing, swallowing, and talking.  Speech is often resulted from the inability to make the jaw, lips, and tongue move as fast as it suppose to.  The breath flow, which makes voices work, may be hard to control.   Many people don't realize that all these elements affects talking.

Dysarthria is the name of the speech problem many individuals with CP have.  This word means there's a problem with the coordination and control of the muscles used in speech.  The speech might be slurred or their face may be a bit funny when viewed.  The following words, hyper nasal and hypo nasal, will be explain in a bit.  Hyper means too much and hypo means not enough.  Hyper nasal refers too much air going through the nose.  Hypo nasal refers to not enough air is going through the nose.   By all means,  listen carefully to them and don't be afraid to tell them you don't understand what they're saying.  And PLEASE insist that they repeat what they said.  You won't hurt their feelings, what you are doing is making them realize they need to slow down so they can be understood.

Between 1/4 to 1/2 experience some sort of learning difficulty.  They may only have problems one or two subjects or may have a more severe learning disability called Mental Retardation.  Mental Retardation simply means the person learns at a slower pace.  People with mental etardation can read, write, and do math.  There are others who have a more severe type of mental retardation, and they might not be able to read, write, or do math.  Don't get me wrong, they can definitely learn, but at slower rate.

Around 1/2 of people with CP have seizures.  What this is is that there's some abnormal activity in the brain which causes the the interruption of what the person is doing.  Many times this abnormal activity occurs in the same part of the brain that caused the CP.  When a seizure pops up, the person might stare into space, stop whatever activity they are doing, or shake uncontrollably.  These seizures usually last a few seconds to a few minutes, and the seizures aren't dangerous.  Not everyone who has seizures has CP.
